Hopkins Street Jewish Cemetery Schaarei Tzedek (Gate of the Righteous)

History

This is Milwaukee's first Jewish cemetery and reported to be the oldest Milwaukee Cemetery remaining on its original site. It was first referred to as "Jew's Cemetery" and later as "Hopkins Street Cemetery". Early all-German records show about 360 burials. The first Jewish rites were celebrated in 1847. Soon after an acre of land was purchased for burial.

It is just south of Union Cemetery, a tiny Jewish burial ground at the intersection of Hopkins and Chambers streets. Address: 1615 West Chambers Street It's location address is 1612 West Hopkins althought it's entrance is on Chambers.

It has burials 1848-1888. It was dedicated in 1859, the few graves remaining still receive care and attention by the congregation Emanu-El B'Ne Jeshurun. There is no evidence of neglect. Records are available in the Emanu-El B'Ne Jeshurun archives.

A number of graves were relocated in 1896 when a portion of the property was condemned by the City of Milwaukee to widen Chambers Street. These graves were relocated, mostly to Greenwood Cemetery.

In May 1981, the cemetery was rededicated and renamed Schaarei Tzedek (Gates of the Righteous). Records show 87 bodies are still buried here. At the rededication a momument was unveiled listing the the names of those still buried there. First burial appears to be in 1849.

The synagogue was erected on Fourth Street between State and Prairie.
