Holy Apostles Cemetery

This active cemetery is located on the north side of ES (National Avenue) between 159th Street and South Town Road, Section 15, New Berlin Township. The cemetery is in the churchyard.

History

Holy Apostles Church was first named St. Valerious. It was established in 1855 when Bernard Casper donated three acres of land for the St. Valerious Catholic Church. One acre of that land was for cemetery use. The first death and burial was Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Johann, wife of Francis Johann, who died September 24, 1855 and was buried September 26, 1855.

In 1889 the name of the church was changed to Holy Apostles. In 1897 another acre to the north and adjacent to the oldest part of the cemetery was purchased for cemetery use. In 1914 it was decided that the cemetery would be private for use by members of the parish. In 1931 another nine acres were purchased for cemetery purposes.

Records

There are cemetery records 1859-date. Records are in Latin until 1910 and there is a map of the cemetery. The earliest cemetery book, 1859-1910, has been copied and is available at the New Berlin Public Library. The church records are not open to the public for research, but the church will answer mail requests at no charge. Contact:

At the Waukesha County Museum there are transcriptions from the tombstones in the oldest part of the cemetery 1856-1922. Many of these stones are no longer standing.
