EDWARD LIEBERT NEHS

"Edward Liebert Nehs Gone to His Reward. One by one they are passing on. The pioneer ranks in our community are fast being depleted. Death again came and took from us, one of our most widely known and esteemed citizens, Edward L. Nehs, who passed away Sunday evening, April 30, following an illness that for several years he bravely fought against. The enroachment(sic) of its fatality was well-known to him and be resignedly awaited the summons. The immediate cause of death was heart trouble. About four years ago his breakdown was noticed, from which he recovered for a time, although ever after his robust constitution with ordinary health, was not sufficient to complete his recovery. He was always about and not until the last week might it be said that his vitality was exhausted. Sunday evening, when it was his accustomed privilege to attend the services of his church, he realized the shadows drawing near and the end came peacefully. The spirit of a just and devout man, winged its way to the higher realm, while the companion of a life time supported the helpless form. The deceased was a son of Charles and Mary Nehs and was born at Millerstown, Lehigh Co., Pa;, Mary 13, 18941. He came with his parents to Wisconsin May 16, 1846, and he grew up to manhood here. On October 27, 1861 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Kraus. Of this union five children were born to them. One daughter died in infancy in 1863, and Mary A. Born in 1869 died in 1899. The widow, one daughter, Ida A. Shunk of this village and two sons Owen H. And Albert M. Of Milwaukee are surviving.

Mrs. Nehs was probably as well known as any person who ever resided in the locality. His family were among the earliest settlers of the community. His grandfather, Frederick Nehs purchased a tract of 750 acres of which the present site of the village of Menomonee Falls is a part. The subject of this sketch started out in life for himself at the age of 21, his education being secured in the public schools of Menomonee Falls, supplemented by attending Carroll College. For a number of years he successfully owned and operated a large saw mill, during which time by careful management of his business he acquired 260 acres of land partly in and contiguous to the village. Later he disposed of part of the farm and the mill property. The deceased was essentially a public spirited man. The record of his life is the best proof that he never ceased to have an interest in all things that were for the moral and material uplift of the community. He had no society or fraternal relations although in an early day became a charter member of the Good Templar Lodge. It was in the church affiliations of his choice where in he brought that never failing source of usefulness. In public duties he was true to every trust imposed. He served as the first supervisor of the village for several terms, as a county surveyor on the school board and for a number of years was active in the work of street commissioner and Justice of the Peace. Liberal in his views, yet staunch in his convictions, it can be truly said that he was a man of kindly heart and generous impulses, a devoted husband and father, and a faithful friend.

The last rites were held at his late residence, the services being private. Rev. J. E. Klein delivered a splendid tribute to his memory. A quartet comprising Mesdames F. G. Schulze and J. W. Cannon, Miss Maude Schlafer and Mr. C. W. Schlafer rendered three selections which were his favorite hymns. The funeral cortege conveyed his remains to Emanuel's cemetery where they were lowered to the final resting place by the side of his kindred dust.

JESS B. NEHS

NEHS - At his residence in Menomonee Falls, Wis., on the 6th inst. died Jess B. Nehs, aged 82 years and 4 days. The deceased was a native of Lehigh county, Penn., and moved to Wisconsin in the year 1849, at which time he settled in Menomonee Falls, whither his father and brother preceded him several years. He was in his early days a school teacher, surveyor, and at one time clerk of the court in his native state. Coming to this state in the earlier days of its settlement, he threw himself with characteristic energy into the various enterprises of the community in which he took up his home, and in 1851 he built the dam and flouring mills at the Falls, now one of the leading mills of the county. This he continued to operate until 1881, when he retired from business. Through a cripple, having had to undergo the amputation of a limb in middle life, he was a man of uncommonly robust constitution. It was a frequent remark with him that he never knew a sick day in his life. His character was one of stern, unflinching integrity, and of the most generous and liberal instincts. None knew him but to respect him and few who enjoyed his acquaintance will ever forget his kindness and geniality. He leaves a widow and two grandchildren, Landon and Estelle Nehs, to mourn his loss.

MARGARET NEHS

Mrs. Margaret Nehs Long an Invalid Passes Away. Quietly and peacefully she passed into endless sleep on the morning of September 20th. Years of patient suffering had reduced her strength; Nature had paid its debt and her spirit was winged to its heavenly home. At her bedside were all her children and her only surviving sister. Margaret Nehs was born in Germany, February 2, 1887. She was one of a family of nine children of Jacob Schuck, a pioneer settler of the town of Germantown who came to America when the deceased was seven years old. In her girlhood she experienced all the vicisitudes(sic) of the early settler. On February 14, 1858 she was united in marriage to William Nehs, since which time her residence of over half a century has been in our village. Of this union - four children were born to them, Henry, Elmer, Mrs. Hattie Schmidt and Mrs. Cora Schlafer, all of whom with three grandchildren survive her. This worth couple lived together more than the golden wedding anniversary which was observed February 14, 1908. Mrs. Nehs preceded her in death in April 7, 1909. Mrs. Nehs had long been an invalid. Throughout a period covering thirteen years she was incapacited (sic) from enjoying even ordinary health for a woman of her age. Of her it can be truly said she was a kind, loving wife and mother, a true Christian woman whose memory will long be cherished by her family and friends. The last services were held at the home and Emanuel's Church Friday afternoon at two o'clock, where a large assemblage of neighbors and friends paid respect to her memory. Rev. J. E. Klein of the Evangelical church of which she was long a devoted member officiated at the last rites Her remains were laid aside her husband's in the family lot.
