JOSH D. REIF

Waukesha Freeman (WI) - December 12, 2005

Reif remembered for 'that big Josh smile'

More than 270 gather in memory of Genesee teen

Among the tailgates of two dozen pickup trucks flanking the outside of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church on Saturday for the funeral of 17-year-old Josh D. Reif was the red Chevy pickup truck that Reif loved.

Friends finished work on the truck this week after the town of Genesee teenager died Tuesday as a result of injuries he sustained from an accident while working at an automotive center in Brookfield. Parents John and Mary Reif and younger sister Megan were joined by more than 270 attendees Saturday afternoon, mostly the youthful faces of Josh's friends and classmates at Waukesha West High School.

A senior at the school, Josh was deeply involved in the automotive repair class, as mechanical repair was described by his family as his "first love." He also enjoyed racing four-wheelers and, along with his father, was an avid outdoorsman and member of the Wern Valley Hunting Club.

But of all the activities Josh was involved in, it was the example he set and the kindness he expressed that mattered most to his sister.

"I'm so proud to say he was my brother," his sister said. "Someone I love told me that our family was only four but now it's 400."

He is survived by grandmothers, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Ruben Reif and David Mervau.

Eulogies by friends mixed sentiments of loss from Josh's dedicated companionship with remembrances of his sense of humor and "that big Josh smile." Kevin Buyatt said Josh was like a brother to him - whether the two were joking around or Josh was fixing the bedliner on Kevin's truck - in expressing thoughts Saturday that he wrote the night after Josh died.

"I need you Josh. You were always there for me," Buyatt said, later adding, "Oh, and did I tell you, your truck looks awesome."

Other friends presented a memorial plaque to the family, commemorating Josh's life and the No. 120 that he wore when racing for the Shaw Town Racing Club. A banner that lined the lobby of the church was also given to family by Waukesha West peers, filled with multi-colored, marker-inscribed stories and nicknames for Josh.

The Rev. Timothy Bruss commended support shown to the Reifs by friends, family and "gear-heads," and noted the positive impact of Josh's life on those around him. The recollection of Josh's life was akin to his confirmation verse, Joshua 1:9 & #8212; "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

"These past few days most certainly could have been full of deep sorrow and sadness. They have instead been full of celebration of Joshua," Bruss said.

Organist and soloist Sherry Marose ended the funeral with a rendition of "Amazing Grace." Burial followed at Genesee Cemetery.

AUGUST ROTT

Source: Menomonee Falls News Thursday, April 2, 1926
submitted by researcher/see contributors page

August Rott Dies Suddenly. It came as a sudden blow to the August Rott family Wednesday morning Apr.. 1, when the father while sitting comfortably in his chair, dropped off in a sleep, never to awaken. Having been in apparently good health up to that time it is difficult for the family to come to its realization. Born and brought up to manhood in the town of Germantown, he married Miss Kathryn Becker after which they made their home and carried on the occupation of farming in that vicinity for a number of years. Later the family moved to a farm in the town of Menomonee and still later to the town of Lisbon. Fifteen years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Mrs. Rott and their family moved to this village where they have made their home ever since. Gieg (sic) and sorrow was the lot of father and mother Rott when a small daughter Kathryn aged 11 died in their early years of marriage. In 1928 the young son Peter gave up his youth in untimely death and in 1932 the eldest daughter Mary was the victim of an auto accident which cause her death, leaving a family of six young orphan children. However a courage and perseverance known to few was theirs. A most commendable feat of a grandfather and grandmother to perform was that of theirs after having brought up and raised a family of their own to maturity, they took upon themselves a family of six young grandchildren to rear and care for. Those surviving are his wife Kathryn; five sons, Frank, Harry, John, Jake and Albert;one daughter Veronica; one sister, Mrs. Albert Lemke and sixteen grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning April 4th at 9 o'clock from the Haack Funeral Parlor to St.. Mary's Church at 9:30 with burial at St.. Mary's cemetery.

William Rust, now of Oklahoma, had brought criminal proceedings against his brother, Charles Rust, alleging that the latter had unlawfully removed his (William's) wife's body, but the criminal proceedings were dropped on Charles Rust agreeing to provide the new coffin and re-inter the body in the Mukwonago cemtery. The court appointed W.C. Trost, undertaker at Mukwonago and Fred Striker, sexton of the Mukwonago cemtery to represent Wm. Rust at the removal. It was expected to identify the body of Mrs. Rust by her wedding ring, which she wore when buried.

Mrs. William Rust, who is a sister of Mrs. Charles Rust, died in Mukwonago fifteen years ago and was buried in the local cemetery. She left a son and a daughter, the latter now Mrs. Hall. The son has for years resided with Charles Rust and the father has tried in vain to gain possession of him, having appealed to the courts for that purpose. William Rust went to Klondike some years ago and came back with a considerable fortune. He then went to Oklahoma to reside, having meanwhile married again. When the Mukwonago Cemetery association was formed and appeal was made to all who had friends buried there to contribute funds for keeping the cemetery in better condition, William Rust, in faraway Oklahoma, heard of the undertaking and sent some money. It was returned to him by the secretary with an explanation that he had no dead buried in the cemetery. This led to an investigation and he ascertained that Charles Rust had removed to a plot on his farm the bodies of several relatives, among them that of Mrs. William Rust. William Rust was angered and brought suit agasint his brother as stated above.
