
Saturday, February 13, 1897 Local Brevities -Coming to the Masquerade? -Miss Viola LAPHAM is suffering from an attack of tonsillitis. -Mr. and Mrs. W. R. ATCHERSON are visiting relatives at Grand Rapids. -County Clerk HARRISON is sick, suffering from an attack of la grippe. -Miss Nellie SULLIVAN, of Arkdale, visited Mrs. John Keogh last Sunday. -We hope all our valentines this year will begin "Please find enclosed," instead of "Please remit." -Mrs. C. R. SICKLES suffered a slight stroke of paralysis last Saturday evening, but is now much improved. -Mr. and Mrs. E. E. SMITH visited friends at Hancock the latter part of last week, returning home Sunday. -General Missionary CHENEY will hold special services at Friendship, beginning Monday night, February 15th. -Fred FIEGEL has sold out his mail route between this place and Necedah, to Mr. WAKE, of Necedah, who has taken possession. -Rev. THOMAS will preach at Spring Bluff schoolhouse next Sunday, February 14, at 3 p. m., and at the Pleasant Prairie schoolhouse at 7 p. m. -The M. W. A. Lodge of White Creek has bills out announcing a Masquerade Ball, at Dunn's Hall, in that place, on the evening of the 22nd: Bill to dance and oyster super $1.00. -This week finishes the publication in the Press of the proceedings of the Board of Supervisors. They will be bound into pamphlets as rapidly as possible and delivered to the County Clerk for distribution. -A telegram received by Mrs. R. B. HOLM last Tuesday noon, announced the death at Rifle, Colorado of the youngest child and only daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. W. BENNETT. The telegram also announced the illness of Mrs. BENNETT. -Those from here who attended the Benefit Ball at White Creek, last Friday night were Mr. and Mrs. W. R. ATCHERSON, Mr. And Mrs. H. F. FREDRICK, Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCONICK, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. BINGHAM, Mr. and Mrs. H. J. DA?TT, H. W, PIERCE, and Misses May PIERCE, Mame WILBER, Ada HOLM, Jessie PIERCE, Gertie ATCHERSON and Bertha HOPPER. Arne ERICKSON Dead Arne ERICKSON, son of Blacksmith ERICKSON of Strongs Prairie was found dead in his buggy when his horse arrived at Arkdale last Sunday afternoon. A coroner's inquest was held on Monday, which resulted in a verdict that the deceased came to his death by the use of alcohol. We understand that the stomach of the deceased has been sent to the city for examination. Deceased was about 31 years of age, and unmarried. The Benefit Ball The Benefit Ball, at Dunn's Hall, White Creek, on Friday evening of last week, given by the Masonic Lodge of this place for the benefit of their esteemed brother, John P. LEWIS, who had the misfortune to lose a hand recently, was a success both socially and financially. While the stormy weather undoubtedly, kept many away, yet the hall was comfortably filled, and many bought tickets who were unable to be present. The music for the occasion was furnished by Messrs DEWEY, GUILICKSON and Frankie STOWELL. The supper, which was contributed by the lady friends of the Masons and s perfect in every respect, was served by Mrs. T. W. DUNN. It is estimated that the net proceeds of the affair will be about $75. The Singing Class Concert The Singing Class which has been conducted during the winter by Rev. J. A. THOMAS, closed its term on Thursday evening of last week, with a concert at Gunning's Hall. The class was divided into two classes, the seniors and juniors, and very nicely did they carry out the parts assigned them. The proceeds which were for the benefit for the teacher, were $9.21. A Pleasant Surprise Party On Tuesday evening last, a large number of the friends of Dr. and Mrs. H. F. FREDRICK. Gathered at the home and spent several hours very pleasantly with them. Though without their knowledge or consent they seemed in no wise alarmed by the suddenness of the attack, and seemed to enjoy the evening as well as the guests. The time was spent playing different games. ???, dominoes, checkers, cards, etc. Refreshments were served in the course of the evening to the merits of which all present will bear testimony. Don't Neglect the Children The State School for the Blind, located at Janesville is now occupying the new building recently completed and has ample accommodation for fifty more pupils. Every child of school age in the state, who is totally or partially blind should enjoy the advantages of this school. Don't neglect the children and allow them to grow up in ignorance when the state provides the means of education absolutely free. For full information and application blanks address, H. F. Carrie DeMOTTE, Teacher From Local Correspondents Point Bluff -Will BILLINGS is home for a week or two. -Mrs. C. JOHNSON is quite sick. Dr. LESTER is attending her. -Elsie COOK was sick Monday with a severe cold. -Lucy JOHNSON has a very bad throat, caused by a bad cold. -Mrs. F. L. GOFF visited Mrs. N. C. WOOD last week. -A nephew of Mrs. Wm. KETCHAM, Mr. M. Hay, Visited among friends here last Saturday and Sunday. -Mrs. Helen BILLINGS was quite sick last Sunday. -Quite a number of the young people met at T. JOHNSON's Saturday evening, eating candy and popcorn, and having a good time. Roche-a-Cris Ripples -The children in several families in this vicinity are afflicted with whooping cough -Mr. J. H. SAXE spent last week at work in the southern part of the county. -Miss Edna ROUS. Of Monroe Center, was the guest of Mrs. O. GARDNER a few days last week. -Miss M. E. HALSTEAD, of Easton, closed another successful term of School here last Friday. The school, assisted by a few of our young people, gave and exhibition in the evening to a full house, and, judging from the applause, was highly appreciated. A collection was taken at the end for the Armenian sufferers, which amounted to $1.40.
