Appleton Post: There is at least one consolation that the office-seekers have had while the president has been indulging in a vacation. The other fellows have not been appointed during his absence. One of the Pages in the senate, a boy 11 years old, made a forcible plea for the passage of the anti-cigarette bill on the floor of the Senate the other day. He has been christened "the boy orator of the legislature." Spring Millinery Opening We wish to announce to the citizens of Friendship and vicinity that an Opening Sale of Spring and Summer Millinery goods will be held at the Millinery Parlors, April 20th, 1897, from half past one until five p. m. In the evening from half past seven until half past ten. A Prize hat is offered to ladies and gentlemen. A guess is given on the price of the hat for the nominal sum of ten cents a guess. The lady or gentleman who guesses the price wins the hat. Come one, come all. Thanking people for their kind and courteous attention that has been shown toward us, we hope to meet with the same in the future, as the name of the town signifies "friendship and love". Refreshments will be served. Mrs. E. M. BLISS Miss S. D. EDDY From Local Correspondents Pilot Knob -Ladies' Aid Society meets on Friday of next week with Mrs. J. B. AYERS -Mr. Joseph VOBERIL is doing some carpenter work for W. ATCHERSON, at Friendship. -Miss Anna WAY is working at Mr. FLETCHER's, at Grand Marsh. -Mrs. H. MORGAN seems to be gaining quite rapidly at present. -Miss Fannie MILLER is working for Mrs. H. MORGAN. -H. SMITH returned home from the woods on Friday last, where he had been working this winter. -Miss JENSEN, of Clark county, is visiting at H. SMITH's. -Mrs. WILL SMITH is visiting friends at Russell Flats this week. -Mrs. H. SMITH and Miss JENSON visited friends near Friendship on Thursday of last week. -Mr. WELLS, from near DOLTON, was through this place on Monday last, peddling medicine. -The folks in this place will have to carry themselves pretty straight as the constable, Mr. John STODDARD, lives right among them. -Mr. George WAY is talking some of selling his stage route to a man by the name of SMITH. -The Misses Lena and Myrtle MYERHOFFER, who have been at work at Hancock, are home on a visit. Rome -The farmers have begun their spring work for another year. -The Wisconsin river is not quite so high at present. -Miss Mamie HORTON returned to Stevens Point, where she will renew her school work at the Normal. -Mrs. F. HIGBEE is on the sick list this week. -Mr. H. P. YORK has purchased a new bicycle. -Miss Bertha GEORGE spent a few days visiting friends at Nekoosa. -Mr. Eddie FORD, of Stevens Point, spent his vacation with his uncle, Rev. J. FORD, and family, at Barnum. -A. H. and S. C. HORTON are home from Milwaukee to spend a few days. -Mr. RICKEY's people have moved into their new home over at Big Flats. -Mrs. CARSON and three children visited her daughter, Mrs. SHURTLIFF, at Barnum. -Will GEORGE was down through this place, buying up meat. -The meetings of the Epworth League have been indefinitely postponed. Point Bluff -Mr. Ed. DOUGLAS and his mother visited at Mr. REID's, near Oxford, last Thursday. -Mr. and Mrs. Ira WEBSTER, of Mauston, are visiting the lady's mother, Mrs. CUMMINGS. -Mr. NELSON, of Kilbourn, visited at Ned WOOD's last week. -The wood saw is still busy. There will be summer wood for somebody. -Miss Bertha BONNELL and Miss Edith CUMMINGS went to their schools the first of the week. -Mr. N. C. WOOD is painting his house. -Married, April 1st, at the home of the Methodist minister, Rev. MILLER, at Pardeeville, Mr. Thomas W. DONNELLY, of Twin Valley, and Miss Daisy E. CAPRON, of Plainville. The bride is a granddaughter of E. F. CROSBY, and an accomplished and bewitching young lady, a favorite with old and young. Mr. DONNELLY is well known and liked, and they will be greatly missed at all social gatherings. Spring Bluff -There was quite a strife at our election between candidates for the offices of chairman and clerk. H. A. MERRIMAN was the successful candidate for chairman, and C. E. KELLOGG for town clerk, and Paul MALINOVSKY and Oscar CATCHIM were elected supervisors. -Harley HALL started last Monday for Vernon county. He thinks of buying a farm there if suited with the country. -Mrs. SEVATSKY has gone on a trip to Chicago. -S. H. PHELPS is having a frost proof cellar put in under his store. It will be the finest cellar in town. -Homer HOSKINS has sold his farm on section 29 to Ignace WAGNER, and has bought 80 acres on section 34 of Mrs. Samuel DEMOTT, and is building a house thereon. -A boy was a long wished for caller at Mr. John DONOVAN's a few days ago, and John hopes he has come to live with him a long time. Jonesville -A. D. ATKINS was elected chairman in the town of New Chester, and C. HOSKINS in Jackson. Some people were slightly surprised April 6th. -H. KEACH, of Jackson, was elected treasurer. -They have measles at E. HUNT's and H. BURGDORFF's. -S. D. FOAT sawed wood in this ville last week. -G. K. McCLYMAN has a large force at work, husking, -Will OSBORN has four or five men husking for him. -E. HUNT has his spring grain all in. -Mrs. Jane McCLYMAN visited in Easton last week. -Mat LANDGRAFF has concluded not to move to Nekoosa this spring. -Miss Maggie MARVIN teaches the Reid school this summer in place of Ad. SEE, resigned. A.P. Accurate Quincy -Louie DITTBURNER and John WORMETT took a drove of cattle to Mauston last Sunday. -Mrs. RIPLEY is on the sick list. Dr. LISTER is attending her. -Miss Etta KELLY visited a few days last week with her uncle, Henry AVERY. -Mrs. Leonard GREENWOOD came home from Minneapolis last Saturday. -Quite a number of our young men have gone away to work for the summer. -Election passed off very quietly. For chairman the vote stood: M. MORLEY, 9; L. SMITH, 14; Reuben MOSHURE, 27; A. H. Greenwood, 37. John McCAUSTLAND and A. DITTBURNER were elected supervisors. Assessor: John HOLDEN, 55; Isaac MOSHURE, 31. Treasurer: L. COLBY, 46; W. R. GREENWOOD, 41. S. A. LINN, our popular town clerk, was reelected, receiving every vote cast. -The cheese factory is nearly ready for the machinery. -August POLLOX is building a new house. John OSTIC is doing the stone work. -The entertainment given at Mr. Joseph REINE's, April 8th, for the benefit of the Sunday school, was largely attended. Receipts, $6. Local Brevities -Wm. WOOCK, of Baraboo, was in town this week -Easter services at the Friendship Church next Sunday. -H. J. DARTT visited Necedah last Friday and Saturday. -J. B. Hill and family visited at ARKDALE on Sunday last. -Housecleaning and yard-cleaning seem to be the order of the day. -Born, to Mr. and Mrs. R. S. HARRISON, April 9th, 1897, a daughter. -The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon SMITH has been quite sick. -A. F. HILL and J. W. GUNNING visited Necedah on Monday and Tuesday last. -Born, April 14, 1897, at Friendship, unto Mr. and Mrs. Peter SORENSON, a daughter. -Wm. RISK, the newly elected chairman of the town of Easton, is in town today (Thursday). -Miss Nessie McGOWAN commenced her term of school-teaching at Big Flats on Monday last. -Mass will be celebrated at the Roman Catholic Church Monday, April 19th, Rev. KASPERSKI officiating. -J. W. GUNNING has been leveling and seeding his lawn this week, laying the foundation for one of the most beautiful lawns in town. -Mr. and Mrs. George LEWIS, of Chicago, arrived in this place last Wednesday, and will spend the summer here. George intends to work his father's farm this year. -The dramatic party are at it earnestly with the most popular farce. "No Cure, No Pay." And the "Quixotic Quakers." These will be presented to the public sometime in May. -The Board of County Canvassers was in session in this village on Wednesday canvassing the returns of the judicial election. The official canvass will be published next week. -The programs for the Lemonweir convention of Congregational Churches to be held in this village on the 2nd and 3rd of June next, have just been issued from this office. A very interesting program has been prepared. -W. R. ATCHERSON has been making improvements on the ATCHERSON House as of late, among them laying a hardwood floor in the dining-room. This with the addition of fresh paint and paper, makes it a very neat and attractive dining-room, indeed.
