GANNING was very fittingly celebrated last Saturday evening. February 13th. Miss May GUNNING worked with a few lady friends to give a genuine surprise to her mother. Mr. and Mrs. GUNNING were, therefore, invited by Mr. and Mrs. W. HOPPER to spend Saturday evening with them. The two comrades were telling once again some of the thrilling incidents and big yarns of the War, while the neighbors of the town, save the sick ones, were gathering at the Pleasant home. At ten o'clock a message was sent to Mrs. GUNNING that a newly arrived visitor was at her home. She and her congenial companion in life left the home of Mr. HOPPER reluctantly. Every corner of the house was occupied, and friends busily engaged at games. And when our friend opened the door, she halted and gave us somewhat of a fierce look. Mr. and Mrs. GUNNING, however, soon took in the situation, and survived the shock. After some songs and games and quite a deal of innocent mirth, a bountiful table of luxuries and dainties was spread. The parson, who was at his study preparing his sermon, was sent for. He came, looking as solemn as an owl, because he feared, I suppose, that the chances for choir singing, whatever for a congregation, the next day, were slim. Before he asked grace, Mrs. A. BLISS was requested to read a beautiful poem she composed for the occasion. We need not tell anything else, because all know the surprising capacity of the Friendship people-for edibles. The ladies of this town know a physiological fact, "That the shortest way to a man's heart is by his stomach." We are justly proud of the GUNNING family, as we proved on Feb. 13, kind-hearted, intelligent and genial. "May thy old age be serene and bright and lead the greatly to the rest of Christ."
