The fire which started from a calcium light catching a gauze curtain in the rear of the stage, spread rapidly, and the failure of the asbestos curtain to fall, soon filled the body of the building with a sea of flame. The rear exits of the theater being locked, many people were trampled to death in the panic that followed before the doors were broken open. Charred bodies of victims are said to lie piled five feet deep and the morgues of the city are overflowing with bodies of the dead, mostly women and children. ------- E. W.
