John Riley HAMMOND who died April 14, 1907 was born in Solon, Courtland 
County, New York, March 18th 1840. He with his parents moved to Illinois 
in his childhood and later he came to Strongs Prairie, Wisconsin, in 1855.

He enlisted February 17, 1862 in Co. E, 16th Reg. Wisconsin Volunteer 
Infantry and was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, July 12, 1865.

He was married to Sarah KEYES in 1866, who died about two years after. He 
was married to Amelia ROSS in 1869, she died February 15, 1902. To them were
born five children, Mrs. Sarah E. SMITH of Illinois, Victor E., Mrs. Celia T.
PRESTON of Oregon, Mrs. Mabel A. TAYLOR of Lime Ridge, and Arthur R. who 
lived with his father at home. They all survive him and were with him during 
his sickness to administer to his many wants and did all that loving hands 
could do, except Victor, who at the time of his death wa s in Milwaukee sick 
and in a very critical condition. He also leaves two brothers, George and 
David, and three sisters, Mrs. Sarah MORSE, Mrs. Deborah BOUGHTON and Miss 
Margaret HAMMOND, besides a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn 
his loss. He was very patient through all the weeks of suffering and 
expressed his willingness to depart, and that all was well. Rev. Wm. SMITH 
officiated at the funeral using as his text, Psalms 103: 15 and 16.

He was a member of the G. A. R. Post at Necedah and his comrades conducted 
the burial services at the Strongs Prairie cemetery.
