Deaths:
Death of a Marquette Co man at Stevens Point; James McLane of the town of Buffalo, in
this county, died at Stevens Point on Thurs of this week, from the effects of a cut on his
knee, received while chipping in the pinery near Wausau. He took cold in the wound, and
started for home with Mr. McCaffrey, but he grew rapidly worse, and they were compelled to
stop at Stevens Point, where he died as stated above. The corpse passed through here today.
The deceased leaves a wife and four small children. 13 Jan.

Drew - In the town of Douglas, Marquette Co., Wis., Feb 9th, 1872, of convulsive fits,
George Joseph Drew, son of Mathias Drew aged 17 years and 10 months. 17 Feb.

Quite a number of old people, and some old settlers in this county, have died this winter.
One old lady in Mecan, who lacked only a few months of being one hundred years old, died
about two weeks ago. Two men - old settlers of Neshkoro - died last week, and both buried
the same day. Old Mr. Clay, who has been afflicted with a cancer for many years, and Mr.
Ward, who has for a long time been a merchant in Neshkoro.

Henry German, father of A. H. German, died last week at the age of 82 years.

David B. Linsley, of Packwaukee, died on Monday of this week, and was buried on Wed. Mr.
Linsley was from fifty five to fifty six year of age, and has been a resident of Packwaukee
nearly twenty years, and has made considerable property in that length of time by attending
to his own business. Mr. Linsley was a respectable and respected citizen. He was a member
of the Oxford Lodge of Masons, and was buried with Masonic honors. By request, the funeral
was conducted and Masonic service pronounced by S. A. Pease, Deputy Grand Master of the State.
The Oxford Lodge generally, and some from the Montello Lodge, were in attendance, besides a
large assemblage of people, to pay their last respects to a worthy good man. Mr. Linsley
leaves a wife only, they having no children of their own. Thus, one by one, the old people
and old settlers of this county are dropping away by death reminding others of a younger
generation that time will soon measure the distance between those who have gone and those who
remain. 24 Feb.

Hartwig - In this village, March 8th, 1872, G. Theodore, only son of William and Julia
Hartwig, aged 1 year, 1 month and 7 days. 16 Mar.

Deaths - John Gory, aged fifteen years, son of William Gory, of Montello, died very
suddenly after six or seven hours sickness, and was buried Monday of this week. On the
same day a girl three years old of the same family was taken sick and died Thurs morning.
We have no knowledge of the sickness or disease of which these children died. 23 Mar.

Suicide: A very singular and strange suicide occurred in Harrisville, on Wed. of this week.
The circumstances are as follows: On Monday, two days before, a man by the name of Warren
Murdock, of Markesan, Green Lake County, went through Montello to Harrisville, engaged in
the business of selling corn planters. Wed morning he was seen about the hotel, and was last
seen by a Mr. Emerson, (who stopped at Harrisville overnight), in the forenoon about the hotel
barn. In the afternoon Murdock was found hanging from the rafters of the barn in the hay
loft, by some leather lines taken from his own harness. He leaves a wife and three or four
children at Markesan. No cause has yet been assigned for this strange conduct on the part of
the suicide. 23 Mar.

Died in Packwaukee, on Monday of this week, Abraham Vanzile, about 45 years of age. This
man moved from NY last summer on to a farm in Packwaukee. He went to Chicago a few weeks
ago to earn some money at his trade. He was taken sick with this new brain and spinal
disease, came home and died in two or three days. He leaves a wife and five or six children,
all strangers in a strange country. The people in that neighborhood should remember these
strangers and their unfortunate situation. 4 May

Drake - In the village of Oxford, May 20th, Mrs. Wealthy Drake, aged 86 years, 10 months and
16 days. This old lady was the mother of C C Drake, Esq., who now lives in Oxford, and who
has been blessed and favored with a mother's company and associations far beyond the average
of men or women who revere a mother's name, and mourn when she leaves them, even at that
advanced age. The old lady has finished her work, and done it well. He memory and her good
example - like gold that always shines and never rusts out - is all there is left of her in
this world. 14 May

Drowned: Last Sunday, in the town of Springfield, two young men were in a small lake
swimming. George Thurber, aged about 21 years, and James Leech, some younger. The youngest
boy got beyond his depth, and unable to swim the elder one went to his help, and
notwithstanding, he could swim, the drowning boy caught the older one and they both went to
the bottom and were drowned. 3Aug.

Dibell - In the village of Montello, on the 13th inst,. Adelbert Dibell, aged about 33 years.
Mr. Dibell, was raised in this town. He was well known and highly respected. He had been
running the Mississippi with lumber and came home with a fever, which yielded readily to
treatment; but an unexpected relapse took him away, and he will be missed by his many friends.
He leaves a wife, father, sister and brother, but no children. 21 Sept.

Rood: In this village, on the 7th inst,. Edith Rood, aged 86 years. She leaves four
children, two in this county, S. R. Rood, County Judge and Widow Huthchinson, and two sons
in the southern portion of the state. The old lady has been for the past several years, in
her second childhood, apparently caring but little about staying or going so that death was
no dread. She had lived her day, and the call to go home was greeted with more joy than
grief. 12 Oct.

Older: At Fremont, Iowa, Oct 19th, 1872, Jesse Older, aged 75 years and 7 ½ months.
Mr. Older was well known in this county as he came to Packwaukee in the spring of 1850,
and lived there until six years ago, when he, with his wife, moved to Iowa, to live with a
son. Uncle Jesse, as he was called and familiarly known, was one of the most kindhearted
and genial men that ever lived, having no enemies, but as many friends as he had acquaintances.
He has lived to see his family, six children, all settled in life, and for the past ten or
twelve years he has had but few cares, except his own sickness which has been long and
sometimes severe; but now he is relived from the last earthly trouble. 16 Nov.
