St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery
River Hills
History
This area was originally known as East Granville. The cemetery is located in the 9500 block of Upper River Road, River Hills. The cemetery is difficult to find, as it is hidden by trees and there is no marked entrance. Enter N. Upper River Road from Brown Deer Rd. Park on the street and climb through the trees.
A church once was located north of here, on the west side of Range Line Rd., south of County Line Rd. The minister's home for the old church still stands at 9595 N. Range Line Rd, and just to the north of the old church. St. Peter's Church originally stood on the south side of the 3900 block of what is now W. LeMont Blvd, in Lac d'Coeur Subdivision, Mequon. The orginal cemetery was here too.
The oldest gravestone is that of Wilhelmina Wussow; b. and d. 1855, although the cemetery was not officially established until April 4, 1863 when John and Uliana Magdalena Dehling, Sr. sold to Wilhelm Milbrath, Lorenz Blendinger and George Guiddemeyer (Kuettemeyer), trustees of the German Ev. Lutheran, St. Peter's Church of the town of Granville, land 182' x 239' in the NE one quarter Sect. 1, for $16.00. "Said property was to be used only for support of a church and school building and a graveyard. Said property never to come into the hands of an apostolical party in case discussions and schisms occur.
There is an expanse of unmarked land to the east of the oldest existing tombstones. Early burials could have been in this area, and the markers now have disintegrated or were destroyed over the years.
In the year 1862, a group of Lutheran families in the East Granville area, organized St. Peter's Lutheran Congregation. The same year the members were cheered to see their first log church completed on a piece of land which now is known as the church cemetery. In 1868 they were able to call their own pastor who was Rev. J. Rennicke.
St. Peter's Church ceased in 1960 and the few remaining members transferred to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Brown Deer.
It is suspected this cemetery is neither church nor village maintained. The land for the cemetery was never deeded to St. Paul's upon the disbanning of St. Peter's. The Trustees of the congregation maintained the cemetery for some time, but then gave up its maintenance due to lack of help. Also, as stated by the current pastor there is a liability issue since St. Paul's does not have ownership of the land.
In previous years, there was some discussion about the site with the Village of River Hills and a tree company and members of a Jewish synagogue did some work in it a few years ago, but nothing since.
