Martin R. Woodruff was born at Avon, Hartford County, Connecticut on April 8th, 1827. He lived at home until 1851 and in 1854 came west and for a short time engaged in the lumber business above Stevens Point and on the Yellow River.

In 1880 he came to Quincy and purchased about five hundred acres of land which he converted into a fine farming estate, erecting a comfortable residence and commodious outbuildings, and where he resided until the time of his death.

Mr. Woodruff was married on December 25th 1869 to Mrs. Mary Chase, who survives him. He also leaves to mourn three children, Mrs. J. Austin, Miss Annie and Winthrop, also three stepchildren, Alvin, George and Samuel Chase.

Mr. Woodruff was a member of Quincy lodge number 71, F. & A. M. In political belief he was a Democrat and took a keen interest for many years in public affairs. He filled many township offices, and in every way promoted the welfare of the community in which he resided. During his long residence he surrounded himself with a host of friends who held him in highest esteem.

Mr. Woodruff died at his home in Quincy on January 26th, and funeral services were held at the home on the 29th, under the auspices of Quincy lodge F. & A. M., interment being in the Quincy cemetery.
