Mr. and Mrs. Robert N. York celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Gilman, in Friendship on Thursday, May 26.
Both Mr. and Mrs. York are natives of Adams county and were born to pioneer parents when this county was in its beginning.
Robert York is the son of Oliver M. and Lydia York and was born September 1, 1854, in the town of Easton. Emma York is the daughter of John M. and Hannah Blythe and was born in the twon of Monroe on March 10, 1861. Their marriage on May 26, 1880, took place in the village of Barnum, one of the early business centers of the county located in the town of Rome. Barnum has disappeared as a village, but the name is still preserved as the designation of a school district in that part of the county.
>With the exception of about a year in 1883, during which time they lived near Wapeton, North Dakota, their entire married life has been spent in Adams county. They have made their home in different parts of the state, being located for several years in the town of Monroe, where Mr. York was a carpenter by trade and also operated a blacksmith shop. They also lived in Adams for several years when that city was being built up and he was employed by the Chicago and North Western railroad company. About 18 years ago they moved to Spooner, Wis., where Mr. York owns a small farm, and where they lived about nine years, then coming to Adams when their health began to fail, where they have since made their home with their son, Sherman York, and their daughter, Mrs. Charles Gilman of Friendship. Both Mr. and Mrs. York are very active and enjoying good health considering their advanced ages of 84 and 77 years. Six children were born to them, all of whom are living, namely, Mrs. Stella Wheelihan of Duluth, Minn., Mrs. Viola Gilman of Friendship, Sherman York of Adams, Mrs. Bess Richardson of Yakima, Wash., Glenn York of Duluth, Minn., and Mrs. Ruth Fay of Blissfield, Mich. They also have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dr. R. Y. Wheelihan of Milwaukee is their grandson.
Only Mr. and Mrs. Sherman York and daughter Odette of Adams were present at a 6:30 dinner at the C. H. Gilman home in honor of their parents' anniversary. (A photo of the couple was printed in the newspaper)
